STRIKE: DELTA State House of Assembly Workers

DELTA State House of Assembly workers, under the aegis of Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PSAN, Monday, embarked on an indefinite strike action, crippling activities at the Assembly complex.

The union, in a communiqué by its Chairman, Mr McCartney Obrutu, called for the immediate amendment of the House of Assembly Service Commission Law which was passed in 2013.

Among other issues, the aggrieved workers are demanding that the office of the Chief of Staff of the Assembly be occupied by a staff of the Assembly as prescribed by the Fiscal and Responsibility Law. They are also demanding car and housing loan which they said should be made accessible to staff, while staff claims of over 10 years be paid to their respective beneficiaries.

In his reaction, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr Peter Onwusanya, said the action of the workers amounted to labour intimidation and “as such erred in locking the gate of the Assembly complex, even against elected lawmakers. You can only lock out your union member, not elected law makers of the Assembly.”
