Bayelsa Shell Flow Station Closed by Youths and Women

Nembe grieved youths and women in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have shut down two flow stations owned by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), along the Nembe creek 1 and 2.

The facilities, which produced about 600,000 barrels of crude oil per day, were yesterday invaded by the youths at about 10am.

The aggrieved indigenes, who were armed with placards some of which read “sale of our wealth by Shell is theft against mankind”, “we are angry, we will no longer take it”, “Enough of neglect and inhumanity”, Nembe people reject sale of oil field”, accused the the oil giant of neglect of signed Global Memoradum of Understanding (GMoU).

They lamented that in spite of the peaceful disposition of the Nembe people to peaceful exploration activities for over 50years, the company has failed to fulfil the promised electricity, water and good health facilities.

Though the protesters met resistance from security operatives including soldiers, who stooped them from invading the SPDC Nembe 1 flow station, the youths succeeded in shutting down the facility.

Chairman of the Nembe Oil and Gas Committee, Chief Nengi James, after a meeting with officials of the SPDC at the Nembe 1 flow station, said the protest was a warning signal to the management of the company to review their policy and honour existing agreements with the communities.
